PROJECT CONCEPT
De Profundis – Beksiński VR, developed in 2014 for the emerging generation of VR devices, is an attempt to bring art enthusiasts closer to a new form of interaction with classical art. The 3D environment recreated in the application seeks to transform some of Zdzisław Beksiński’s most iconic paintings into an interactive experience.
Animated elements enrich the virtual space, while the journey is accompanied by ambient music and subtle environmental sounds. The VR headset isolates the viewer from the outside world, enabling a deeply personal and immersive exploration into the hauntingly beautiful universe of Beksiński’s art.
THE SECOND PART OF THE EXPERIENCE
De Profundis “Requiem” begins where the original experience left off. Inspired by the painting AC74, the opening scene — a mysterious encounter by the cradle — invites the user to step forward and continue their journey through a new, undiscovered realm.
In this second chapter, the user is guided through apocalyptic, desolate landscapes inspired by ten of Beksiński’s masterpieces from his fantastical period. Within this experience, scale and time become distorted, and the participant gradually loses their physical form, dissolving into the surreal world of the paintings.
AVAILABILITY OF THE EXPERIENCE
Over the past decade, De Profundis – Beksiński VR has accompanied numerous exhibitions of Zdzisław Beksiński’s paintings, graphics, and photographs in museums and art galleries across Poland and abroad.
Since 2016, during the summer season, the Historical Museum in Sanok — home to the world’s largest collection of Beksiński’s works — has been hosting regular projections of the experience.
